Oak Park High School's Men's Volleyball team is beaming with pride as they celebrate Brian Vergara being named Performer of the Week. The standout team MVP has officially earned this title, and for good reason. Not only has he led his team with determined leadership and elite communication on the court, but he also just achieved a milestone most players only dream of, 1,500 career assists. What makes it even more impressive? He's done it in just a season and a half.
"That is an achievement that most players don't get even when they have 4 years of playing, and he has done it in a season and half. Very impressive," said his coach, beaming with pride. Vergara's volleyball IQ and court vision have played a massive role in Oak Park's success this year, pushing the team to perform at its best in every match.
After playing on a sand volleyball team, he decided to bring his skills indoors and join the Oak Park squad. "I first started playing around March 2020, near the end of 8th grade," he said. "It's been about four and a half years now." Despite only playing for a short time, he's demonstrated a level of strategic understanding well beyond his years.
He credits much of his development to the teammates around him. "Without my team, reaching 1,500 assists would be nearly impossible," Vergara shared. "The chemistry we've built these past four years has been fun and challenging. They push me to match their intensity every single day." Vergara is still deciding between continuing his volleyball career out of state or focusing fully on his academic goals. No matter which path he chooses, his time at Oak Park has already left a meaningful mark.
