The Oak Park men's volleyball team is off to a promising start, fueled by strong leadership, dedicated athletes, and a clear vision for success. After an impressive first year that saw them reach the District Championship, the team is more motivated than ever to take home the title this season. Coach, Jessie Michaels is confident in her players and the program they are building together.
"This year, our goal is not just to get back to the District Championship but to win it," she said. "We also want to continue growing this program into something students are excited to be a part of. We have some of the best athletes and students here, and I'm so proud of what they are creating at Oak Park."
With an increased focus on preseason training, the team is already seeing their high potential. Open gyms and conditioning sessions started earlier this year, giving players more time to develop their skills. Training sessions now emphasize both individual and team development, along with agility training to enhance overall athletic performance. "Volleyball is both an individual and a team sport," Coach explained. "We assess players daily, tracking their progress to find the best fit for the team."
Beyond physical training, mental toughness is a key focus. Team chemistry is another priority, with senior players stepping up as leaders to foster strong connections among teammates. "The mental aspect of volleyball is huge," said Coach. "It's a game of mistakes, and the team that makes the fewest usually wins. Our players are learning to rely on each other for support and motivation."
With over 30 athletes already attending open gyms, not including those still competing in winter sport, the future of Oak Park men's volleyball looks bright. The seniors have set a strong foundation for the program, and with a committed group of younger players ready to step up, Oak Park is geared up for another exciting season.
